Frequently Asked Questions

How does online therapy work?

The Painwise online counseling platform uses secure video conferencing to enable face-to-face conversations. The video call is completely secure (HIPAA-protected) and confidential.

When you schedule an appointment, I will send you a private, secure link via email. At the time of your appointment, you can use your computer, tablet, or smartphone to connect. All you need is a quiet, private space with no distractions and a set of headphones or earbuds (the ones that come with smartphones are usually just fine).

How do I get started?

Just click here for a Complimentary First Session. Fill out the contact form and schedule a complimentary 30-minute evaluation session.

When you get your first appointment scheduled, I will send you a link via email, enabling you to connect by video at the time of your appointment.

At the time of your appointment, you’ll go to my specific practice URL, type in your name when prompted, and be taken to my virtual waiting room. I’ll get a notification that you’re ready and I’ll log in to join the session.

We will have a brief discussion about the nature and urgency of your pain symptoms, your goals, and how you expect your life to be different if therapy is working. I will tell you if I believe I can help you. I’ll also tell you how I plan to do that.

Prior to your appointment, I will send you an intake questionnaire via email. The intake questionnaire is required to help us determine if we’re a good fit for each other and gives me the information needed to assist you in choosing an appropriate number of sessions to get started.

During this appointment, we will decide if we are a good fit for each other. This is a mutual decision. It’s not only about whether I think I can help you. It’s also about whether you feel comfortable working with me.

If all those things line up, I will tell you what happens next in terms of session structure, how to get the most out of therapy, session frequency, and payment options.

Rates/Payment Options

We offer standard per-session rates and package rates.

Standard Session Rate:
50-55 minute one-off pain therapy sessions are $200

Package Rates:
1-month commitment $297

The basics. Nuts and bolts way for immediate, personalized relief for your pain. 2 personalized one-on-one sessions per month. Unlimited access to group drop-in sessions.

Most people feel immediate relief after the 2 one-on-one sessions. If you’re persistent, and join the group drop-ins, 3 times a week, not only will you get pain relief, but it allows you to change chronic pain patterns and manage pain better.

1-month commitment $597

The real deal. Immediate relief and more. Keep your pain under control. The most popular way to start the program. 4 personalized one-on-one sessions per month. Unlimited access to group drop-in sessions.

This package is the most popular way to start the program because you work with the guide every week. The four sessions and group drop-ins build on each other establishing a new baseline of consistent, month-long pain reduction. Fatigue is commonly related to the amount of pain you’ve been experiencing. A month of consistent pain reduction reduces fatigue and helps you feel more rested, which is key to a healthier you.

1-month commitment $997

All the bells and whistles. When your pain issues are EVERYTHING. The most intensive, high-impact level of care. Personalized for your needs. 6 personalized one-on-one sessions per month. Unlimited access to group drop-in sessions. Access to guided recordings.

You may want to consider this package if you want to start with the most high-impact approach. Whenever you have a flare-up or can’t sleep it triggers strong emotions. These feelings have a noticeable impact causing you to isolate from others. With this package, your care is prioritized. You always have a proactive partner engaging with you when you may need it most. There are multiple weekly sessions, group drop-ins, and additional sessions that may be booked at discounted rates. You also have access to guided recordings any time you need them. These are comfort agents that ultimately help you engage with your pain, in a different way. In the end, the goal is effective self-management of your pain. Integrating this program into your life makes this goal achievable in 30 days.

How are the packages different?

To ensure you stick to a schedule, set aside 60 minutes on a weekly or bi-monthly basis for one-on-one sessions. In the one-on-ones, the guide covers every aspect of effective pain relief personalized to your condition. You can decide the appropriate level of treatment.

You can meet bi-monthly to start the program at the basic level ($297 package). Those who can commit to meet weekly have even better results ($597 package 4 sessions). If you choose the $997 package, you’ll have biweekly one-on-ones with the guide (6 sessions) and the fastest, most powerful way to quell your pain. Unlimited group drop-in sessions (included with every package) are essential for maintaining consistent pain relief in the gap between regularly scheduled one-on-ones.

Can I book just one session and see how that feels, or do I have to book a package?

Yes, you can book a single, one-off pain therapy session or as many as you want, but the packages are much more affordable, and you get the bonus of unlimited group drop in’s three days a week with every package.

What are group drop-ins?

In group sessions, all members join online. There are usually five or more people participating. Once all members of the group are present, your guide will lead a 45-minute mindfulness session that’s the same process taught in the one-on-one sessions. The best way for you to get consistent pain relief is to participate in the groups, especially during weeks when you don’t have one-on-one sessions scheduled. The important benefit of the groups is the chance to receive validation and support from others living with chronic pain who share similar values. Participants can ask questions of the therapist and those conversations provide members with additional insights they wouldn’t normally have access to.

How do I ensure my privacy when in a group?

Group counseling is confidential. All group members are asked to make a commitment to protect each other’s confidentiality by agreeing not to disclose the identities of other members, and not to share with non-group members what was discussed by others in the group. You are not permitted to use any recording devices during groups. It is imperative that you are in a private space and that no family member or friend is in hearing or visual proximity to you or to your electronic device during the session. While the group leaders cannot guarantee absolute confidentiality (since we cannot control the behavior of group members), we find that members are usually very respectful of each other’s privacy.

Is there a minimum time commitment for therapy?

This isn’t meant to be a long-term treatment approach. It is designed to teach you strategies to employ on a long-term basis. With that said, therapy does not have a set time length because people learn at different paces, and some have more to learn than others.

We do recommend seeing your therapist weekly for two months. First off, evidence-based research studies generally show an association between weekly psychotherapy sessions and positive outcomes for clients. This appears to be especially important in the first stage of therapy when you’re beginning to get into the energetic core of your pain.

Once a client’s symptoms have improved, and they feel equipped with the right tools that they came to us for, most clients enter a “maintenance” phase, where they see us twice a month. After the maintenance phase (generally three months or more) many folks choose to “terminate” therapy (with the understanding that their therapist always has an open door for them to return on an as-needed basis).

Can I use my insurance?

The majority of insurers now cover telehealth. I am an out-of-network provider so you will pay me upfront, and I will give you a monthly statement that you can then submit to your insurer for reimbursement. Using out-of-network benefits, insurance will typically reimburse a percentage of each session (65% for example). You may have a deductible that must be satisfied before any reimbursement can occur. Many in-network plans also have a deductible, so there may not be a significant difference in out-of-pocket expenses. The best way to find out about your cost is to ask your insurance company directly. Prior to beginning therapy, I will contact your insurance company and provide you with an estimate of what you will owe for each session.

How do I describe your therapy to my insurance when I ask about coverage?

For our clients that wish to use their insurance, we provide monthly statements that we help you submit to your insurance company for out-of-network coverage. You fill out our insurance form and we reach out to your insurer asking them if they cover out-of-network mental health services. Your insurer will let us know if they will reimburse, and at what rate. They will also let us know if you have a deductible that you must meet before they will provide reimbursement. Once we have this information, we can give you a clear understanding of how much your out-of-pocket costs for therapy will be.

Cancellation Policy

I understand the need for flexibility, especially when it comes to juggling appointments. For that reason, I have created a 24-hour cancellation policy.

If you have purchased a package plan, and you must cancel at the last minute, the fee will be waived for one cancellation per year without a penalty. All other appointments must be canceled within a 24-hour time frame, or you will forfeit the session. All canceled appointments must be rescheduled to take place during the one-month time frame of your package, or you will forfeit the session.

One-off sessions:
If you pay a per-session rate and you must cancel, 24-hour advance notice is required (yep, you can’t cancel last minute or you will be charged the full fee). All canceled appointments must be rescheduled to take place within a one-month time frame, or you will forfeit the session and be charged the full fee.

You have full access to an online scheduling system to cancel and reschedule your appointments.

How do I cancel my subscription package?

Your subscription continues monthly unless you want to cancel. One week prior to renewal you will get an email letting you know the subscription is about to renew. In the email select the “Cancel” option. You will get an email confirming that your cancellation is being processed.

How do I renew my subscription package?

Your subscription continues monthly unless you want to cancel. You don’t have to do anything to renew.

What happens in a session?

Therapy is a partnership between us. It’s a very active form of therapy. This means you will do pain relief exercises in the session, not just talk about your pain. For example, I want you to tell me what you notice going on in your body and talk about the strong feelings involved. This way you can be an active partner in the therapy. I’ll consistently check-in and ask, “are we on the right track?”

It is ineffective and counterproductive to try to suppress pain. Suppression of pain leads to more distress and the need for more suppression. It’s like trying to fight your way out of quicksand – it just pulls you down further.

Instead, I’ll teach you concepts and skills so that you can reduce the impact and influence of pain through the effective use of mindfulness. You can practice these skills in the weekly drop-in groups. It’s like learning to play the guitar or drive a car, the more you practice, the better you get. The goal is effective management of your pain. Integrating these skills into your life makes this goal achievable. You’ll be able to get deeply relaxed and release pain on your own.

What is mindfulness therapy?

Mindfulness is bringing awareness to your here-and-now experience with openness, interest, and receptiveness. Evidence-based research tells us mindfulness helps to reduce the impact and influence that pain has over your life. When you’re mindful, you’re not in pain. You can’t be suffering in pain and mindful at the same time.

The more time you spend in mindfulness, the healthier the brain will be, and the greater the pain reduction will be. In every session, I’ll guide you into mindfulness and help you stay in a deeply relaxed state long enough for the brain pathways to the nervous system to open up and release pain. We will go deep into the energetic content of the pain. That’s where relief occurs. The body begins to re-orchestrate whatever patterns you need to let go of for your well-being to occur. The pain reduction that accrues from spending the requisite time in mindful awareness differentiates Painwise Therapy from other treatments.

If mindfulness, meditation, or present-moment-awareness seems challenging, woo-woo, or not your thing, I encourage you to just try it anyway. It’s possible you haven’t been taught correctly, or you haven’t had enough practice to truly understand the value of these skills. When you know how to do these skills correctly, you can develop mastery in managing the pain.

What is your training?

With a doctorate in clinical psychology and extensive specialized training in mindfulness based-psychotherapy, I spent over 25 years helping patients diagnosed with chronic pain successfully reduce the debilitating effects of this illness. I developed Painwise Therapy, an integrative self-healing program that readies pain patients to take an active role in their treatment. Jon Kabbat Zinn, the founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at The University of Massachusetts, saw the program’s focus on self-healing as an important contribution to the field of mind-body medicine and enthusiastically endorsed the treatment. David Black, eminent mindfulness researcher at the University of Southern California says, “Dr. Crook’s program could be a major leap in advancing care and trauma-reduction in pain patients.” As a professor of Mindfulness at Mount Saint Mary’s University, I help faculty and students gain the confidence to let their inherent wisdom take flight.
